“The loveliest thing you can cook for someone who’s close to you is about as nice a valentine as you can give.” said Julia Child.
I started preparing for the man of my dreams to show up before Valentine’s Day: making him cookies etc. Not really, but I wish! I just love the colors and it is a holiday based around chocolate and sweets.
To see how to make sugar cookies and royal icing check out my previous blog entry. I got the cutter from Old River Road company or you can buy it a Sur La Table. It is a 5″ heart. I rolled out the cookies to 1/2″ because I wanted them thick in order to ship.
1.)I let the cookies cool and then made a batch of royal icing. You need the icing to be thick enough that it holds it’s shape. I made a pastry bag out of parchment but if you are unsure just use a piping bag with a small round tip or use a plastic ziplock bag with the corner cut off.
2.)Once the icing outline is firm make a thinner batch of royal icing. The more liquid you add to the royal icing the longer it will take to set. You can use a squeeze bottle or spread the royal icing out with a spoon towards the edge of the cookie. Make sure the icing is not too runny that you can not control it. You can use a toothpick to push the icing to the corners.
3.)As soon as you spread the icing out to the edges pipe small dots of red icing which is the same consistency as the white royal icing.
4.)Using a knife go through the dots starting at the top pulling the knife in the center of each dot to create a beautiful hearts.
5.)Fill all the cookies will royal icing and let sit for one day until the icing firms up.
6.)These cookies take a lot of patience and I wish my mom was here to help me. As a kid ,my mom would always help me in the kitchen doing the fine details on the cookies. It is always fun when there is two having a “sugar cookie party” ,as I would call it. But, since my mom lives in Pennsylvania I had to crank up the music and have a solo sugar cookie party.
So be creative and create your own cookies for your lover or friends. If you do not feel comfortable piping you could always use a stencil and spread the icing over top of the stencil with an offset.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
